Fantasy helps shape the Golden Age of illustration. In the mid 1920s, Maxfield Parrish was a household name. He was considered the most popular American artist before Norman Rockwell and was credited with helping to develop the future of visual arts in the United States. The first color reproduction posters displayed the glowing hues and architectural detail of his work. Magazines, advertisements, books for kids and adults, calendars, greeting cards, and menus all used his illustrations. This biography for children contains photographs of the artist and is illustrated with the colorful dream lands he was known for creating.

From the Author:
While researching the life of Maxfield Parrish, I enjoyed viewing his art---what an imagination and style! And the color---he created beautiful rich, bold luminous colors that many decades later, still impress us. I included in the book many examples of his ads, drawings, murals, posters, and paintings to accompany his inspiring life story.
From the Inside Flap:

An extraordinarily gifted artist, Maxfield Parrish helped shape the Golden Age of illustration with a career lasting more than half a century. Parrish received a university education and toured the galleries of Europe, but he said his father was his best teacher. Stephen Parrish painted with his son often and trained him to pay close attention to nature.

Parrish grew up painting at an easel and visiting Europe to study the Old Masters. His imaginative style and lively colors decorated books, advertisements, candy boxes, calendars, and cards. By 1925, prints of his work hung in millions of homes all across America.

This biography for children contains photographs of the artist and is illustrated with the colorful dreamlands he was known for creating.

Lois V. Harris's fiction, nonfiction, and photography have appeared in children's magazines and in the L.A. Times. She is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, the Authors Guild, the University of Washington Alumni Association, and the Seattle Art Museum. The author of Mary Cassatt: Impressionist Painter and Charlie Russell: Tale-Telling Cowboy Artist, Harris lives in Anacortes, Washington.
