An obscure old newspaper story is dug up out of the St. Louis Globe morque. The idea starts out as a filler but becomes news to the reader. A murder took place at the 1835 Rocky Mountain rendezvous of Mountain men, trappers, and St. Louis suppliers and someone who was there is still alive and living in St. Louis. In 1915, ninety-seven-year-old Benjamin Franklin Snodgrass relates the truth of Chief Twisted Hairs murder that took place there, to a young and wet behind the ears St. Louis Globe reporter, Jonas Stedman. This is his first assignment as a reporter. He hopes he can put his heart into this boring story.
