An attempt to tell Margot's story.

Preface to Margot's story: Margaret Olivia Murphy arrived in the world in the typical manner on December 30, 2004 and she drowned on a float trip on May 24, 2009. Although dreadfully limited in quantity, Margot’s 1,972 days on earth had a special velocity to them as she made an enduring impression on countless people and places. Her curled fire-red hair, beautiful blue eyes, contagious smile, unbridled joyfulness, outsized confidence and natural strut turned heads wherever she went, and Margot’s loving nature was a gift beyond description to those blessed to know her well. There was just something electric about Margot – like you could see the music in her, and it was as contagious as her smile.

Of the questions the loss of a child forces upon the grieving parents, perhaps the toughest to address are: How can this be the end? How can I no longer have a relationship with this child I loved with all my being and cared for so completely?

Although not at all clear to us at first, we eventually began to see that Margot is indeed still with us as she will be for all eternity. We also began to see that even Margot’s story here is still very much alive and that she had only just begun leaving her mark when she came into this world via Fredericksburg, Virginia.

I guess this may be called a work of historical and projected fiction wrapped around a long rambling digression. While I’ve changed some names and created some content and characters, including Danny Blackthorn, Josh Clark, Gus Hoopoe and Athena Kilrain, none of whom I’ve ever met, most everything else related to Margot’s life and times is true and described as accurately as I am able, including anything I may perceive to be a potential greeting from her after her passing.

99% of the writing for this attempted story was completed by the spring of 2010, while the majority of the editing took place in the winter of 2011. Most of what is described through 2010 actually happened, although not necessarily as described herein. Content beyond 2010 mostly has been fabricated.

Constrained by imagination, ability and experience, the story is told unavoidably from my point of view. Although I could not avoid calling my dear wife by her name, which is Debbie, neither Margot’s four siblings nor the rest of Margot’s family nor her many friends are mentioned by name, unless they’ve already departed this world or unless mentioning the real name seemed unavoidable without being overly intrusive. Margot shared her life and spirit with all of these people too, of course, but they know that already, and I’ve opted not to invade their privacy any further than I thought was necessary to attempt to tell her story.

It should be noted that this is an Irish story and as such, by definition, there is some fighting, drinking, cursing, bar-room philosophizing, hoping, apologizing, laughing and crying. I must confess in advance that I do not pretend to know how the story ends - I guess it provides some comfort to hope that it just keeps going. I think that while value may be and frequently is both created and destroyed, once a beautiful soul is created, it endures forever, and like energy, it can never be destroyed.

As I tell this tale from the vantage point of hindsight and see how her influence has manifested itself over time, I finally now accept what I had hoped to be true then – that Margot’s time here did indeed represent a celebration of the unique value and joy of human life, and her death was merely a transformation of beauty and spirit rather than their destruction.
