About the Author:
Colonel Jack Ziskind, the author, served in the European Combat Zone in World War II. Jack, the eldest of his brothers, was commissioned as a Security Officer at Fort Custer, Michigan. He crossed North Africa, from Casablanca to Kasserine Pass, then to Sicily, Italy, the liberation of Rome and the Seventh Army invasion of Southern France. North of Marseille, he set up the 1404 PW Enclosure Company, which has become the biggest PW camp in Europe. Jack was also on special assignment with Scotland Yard in Britain and Ireland before returning to Pittsburgh, where he became CO of an Army Reserve Intelligence Unit. Jack died on April 13, 2011, approximately one month before his 100th birthday. Sam, after receiving a Masters degree at Yale University, entered military service. Sam organized and edited army newspapers and publications stateside (Camp Shenango, Reynolds, PA), in Britain (Tidworth, Shrivenham, Salisbury, 10 Colonel Jack Ziskind and London), wartime France (Paris and Nice Stars and Stripes). In Nice, Sam also managed information activities for USRRA—the wartime agency that provided R&R (recreation and relaxation) programs for more than 900,000 troops. Sam later helped organize and publish the official magazine of the Army and became its managing editor. For his wartime and civilian service, on February 7, 2002, he was inducted into the Army Public Affairs Hall of Fame. Gerald, the youngest brother, left the University of Pittsburgh Law School for armored force training at Fort Knox and Needles, CA. He was tank commander in Huertgen Forest during the Battle of the Bulge and among the first to cross the Rhine at Remagen. He later became military governor of Oberlin Kreis and Weilburg, Germany, before returning to complete his degree.
