While celebrating the arrival of pioneers in the Valley of the Great Salt Lake during the Jubilee of 1897, Annie Taylor Hyde recognized the need for an organization that would "perpetuate the names and achievements of the men, women and children who were the pioneers in founding this commonwealth." Consequently, Daughters of Utah Pioneers was established for this purpose on April 11, 1901 with Hyde serving as first president. Our focus has been and continues to be on preserving pioneer histories and the "silent witnesses" (artifacts) of those illustrious pioneers. By publishing this volume, History of Utah's Tooele County - From the Edge of the Great Basin Frontier, Tooele Company Daughters of Utah Pioneers is honoring their commitment to preserve the history of those stalwart individuals. Shortly after the arrival of these valiant pioneers in Salt Lake Valley, colonization moved forward in the territory. Beginning in 1849 settlements and towns were founded in Tooele County. Tooele is the second largest county in Utah with an area of six thousand nine hundred square miles and a unique geographical make up. Surely it was a daunting problem for these early pioneers to survive and discover ways to make a living. As the lives of these marvelous pioneers are studied, one becomes aware of the physical trials, heartache, grief, faith and determination experienced to arrive at their destination. Often we fail to recognize how difficult their lives were after arriving in the valley. These early residents of Tooele experienced life-threatening hardships as they dealt with a harsh climate, inadequate water supplies, crickets, grasshoppers and Native American conflicts. In spite of the many obstacles standing in their way, these early pioneers of Tooele County were able to establish communities that still exist today.
