The Sports Illustrated Kids Rookie Books series, which debuted last year with football-themed picture books on colors, opposites, and the alphabet, continues with hockey books illustrating concepts. Stretching across each double page spread is a large, colorful photo, often showing players on the ice before, during, or after the game. A few sentences in large type comment on each picture as it relates to the concept. Pointing out good sportsmanship at times, the tone is positive. Kids will be drawn by the quality and the sometimes dramatic action of the photos, which usually focus on the players but also include hockey equipment, rinks, and fans. Hockey Patterns points out “repeating shapes and color” in various places, from the referee’s shirt to the arena seats to the equipment shelf. While there’s no shortage of concept books for young children, picture books involving sports are in short supply and those showcasing large action photos are particularly hard to find. Here’s one way to meet the demand from with young sports fans. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan
