From the Author:
Let me tell you about Magic Totem
I clearly remember the day I sat down and started to write Magic Tomahawk, yes, that was the original title and story.
When I was a young boy, I was 12 years old and was spending the summer with my Aunt Lucy and Uncle Art in Westwood, CA. My uncle and I would go hiking and camping in the Mount Lassen area and one day my Uncle Art played a funny on his nephew, me!
My uncle had buried about a dozen Indian arrowheads in the area we were camping and spending the night, shrewdly, when I was not around or looking. The next morning, Uncle Art had me scrounging around in his special little area and guess what I found? Of course I still have those little arrowheads, 50 years later.
Most authors, I believe, write fiction based on life experiences, or dreams. When I wrote this book, the story flowed so fast that my fingers could not keep up with my brain. I laughed as the story developed and there was never a time when I had to try hard to find the story, it was always there and it had been there since I was 12 and spending that summer with Uncle Art and Aunt Lucy. And, by the way, Farmer Jeffries, I can assure you, looks exactly like my dear Uncle Art, who I lost only a few years later, but have never forgotten.
During editing, it was suggested, smartly, that a tomahawk can have a different mental image to a young adult, an image different than I intended, so the tomahawk was exchanged for a Totem. But, the story didn't change, and still, this was my funnest book to write, and the one that still makes me smile and reminds me of my childhood days.
