AFTER INCOMING is a story of a small group of Vietnam combat troops who return home in Northern California in the early '70s, but don't come back. The story revolves around Jack who cannot go a day without battlefield memories of Nam falling on his head like chunks of raining dirt clogs from nearby mortar explosions. Several flashback and nightmare filled years of just barely getting by on part-time jobs and a small disability check find Jack's life increasingly unravel. Adding to his disillusionment, he realizes that he and his war buddies have been stereotyped as a large scale public nuisance who smoke too much pot, get into too much trouble, resent all authority and are certainly not in the least bit reminiscent of Americas previous war heroes. This translates to Nam combat vets getting a cool reception at the workplace. Along with these veterans increasingly bad attitude, this stereotyping contributes to making difficult every form of personal relationship. Insult to injury for these guys is the relentless pain from physical and mental war wounds. Worse yet, they're told by their friends and community to quite moaning and groaning about the war and move on. Yes, Jack would like that. He wishes he could just tap the heels of his shoes together twice and magically return to the innocent life on the farm that he was swept from by a tornado of incredible events just several years past. Most of these guys just want a study jobs, but if that isn't in the offering, they know how to survive just the same - even if it comes down to robbing a bank. For Jack, in addition to a job, he desires a meaningful relationship to be able to move on. A job and someone with whom to share the rest of his life - without this simplest form of existence becoming available to him, Jack would rather jump off a bridge.
