(from the author’s introductory chapter) Coach John Wooden’s record on the court speaks for itself: 88 consecutive victories; 38 consecutive NCAA tournament victories, 10 NCAA championships, eight undefeated conference seasons, four undefeated seasons. But no listing of his honors or accomplishments can ever begin to describe the man who has touched so many human beings as deeply as he has. If sports are a means to an end, as they are supposed to be, there is a widespread and convincing testimony that Coach Wooden’s wisdom and teachings transcended the basketball court. Almost to a man, Coach Wooden’s former players remain generous in their praise of him. His influence on their lives has been profound and permanent. In a ceremony in 2003, at which the basketball court at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion was named in honor of Coach Wooden and his wife Nell, one of his former UCLA players, Lynn Shackelford, summed up the sentiments of the many former players who were in attendance: “We all kind of lived our lives from what we learned from Coach Wooden.” What coach wouldn’t like to be on the receiving end of a compliment like that? Coach John Wooden was a man I have admired for a long time. I write about him in this book as a way of honoring his well-lived life.
