Two hundred years ago there existed, at the head of the Don River north of Toronto, Ontario, a small village called Carrville. At the heart of the village was a General Store and Post Office built in 1845 by Thomas Cook. The community thrived for decades, and eventually became home for the original Italian immigrants to the area. However, in time, the spread of Toronto’s population and the need for paved roads and suburban homes spelled doom for the village. You will not find Carrville on any modern map but, thanks to Ann Crichton-Harris and Eluned ‘Lyn’ MacMillan, the General Store remains to this day. This is the story of how it was accomplished.
