Is this story true? Are the characters drawn from real people? Did the incidents described so vividly actually happen? Of course not! This is a fictional story based upon activities of fictional people. I did take the liberty of using names that actually existed during this time frame, such as the names of the governor and some other politicians, but these names are fair game for a fictional, historical novel. Otherwise I sat at my typewriter and invented everything. If you want to know the truth of what happened at Polk and McMinn Counties in Tennessee when the GIs came home from World War II then go to the September 8, 1951 edition of Collier's Magazine. According to Wikipedia, "Collier's [was] an American magazine, founded in 1888 by Peter Fenelon Collier. It was initially launched as Collier's Once a Week, then changed in 1895 to Collier's Weekly: An Illustrated Journal, and finally shortened in 1942 to simply Collier's. While the original magazine ceased publication with the January 4, 1957 issue, a brief attempt was made to revive the name in 2012." "Terror in Tennessee," written by Bill Davidson and Harold Twitty for Collier's can be found at http://www.unz.org/Pub/Colliers-1951sep08-00016. It's amazing what a little search on the internet will bring up. Who would guess that the truth of this exact, same story of my interest and imagination is available in such detail? But that's up to you! Search if you like and read the true story, or, just read my imaginative rendition. But if I were you, I'd read both! When I was young -- before the 1950s -- young boys had weekly and monthly magazine routes just like those who delivered to the home daily newspapers. Some boys distributed Collier's, some The Saturday Evening Post, some Liberty Magazine and so on. Fiction stories were excellent in those magazines and so was factual reporting. Those days are gone for good, of course! Meanwhile I do want you to enjoy my short historical novel, Will to Kill! One of the Beaver boys has just been discharged from miltiary service in WWII. His county has long been dominated by a crooked sheriff named Biggs. Ballott stuffing, prostitution, gambling, payoffs from illegal whisky and anything else that would make Biggs rich and powerful. This sheriff would also intimidate by outright murder. What were the returning GIs to do? This is a fictionalized story of some truth found in Tennessee politics and as recorded in Tennessee newspapers as well as the national magazine Collier's. Where a changing era forces a Tennessee county to trade bullets for ballots After WWII -- End of one of Tennessee's last corrupt political Machines -- WWII veterans take back the ballot from a corrupt Sheriff -- End of one of the South's "Good Old Boy Politics" -- As told and remembered by Leon Beaver in 1978. The short murder mystery is one of those closed door type, and hence the title "Anthor Closed Door Whodoneit." 53,139 words
