Archaeology is a beguiling occupation. Who wouldn't be attracted to finding cool, old stuff buried in the ground? It appeals to the child in us all. But archaeology isn’t all gold masks, crystal skulls and temples. Often it’s chert flakes on a lake shore, burials in the forgotten corner of a field, or pioneer dwellings in the woods. Sometimes it just isn’t all that glamorous. The reality is that for every well-known archaeologist - the kind you might see doing exciting things on TV - there are legions of less high-profile characters working in the background. Their work may not be quite as sexy or result in paradigm-changing discoveries, but it is important and valuable. The following chapters are snap-shots of archaeology from more than forty years of work in both Britain and Canada. Rather than spending too much time on the scientific and technical, Nick has focussed on stories which convey the life of a working archaeologist ...... well, his working life anyway.

About the Author:
Nick Adams has stumbled through a career in archaeology since first taking up a shovel as a sixteen year old in the UK. Working on various projects in Britain, he eventually ended up in Canada, at first working for the Province of Ontario in Sault Ste. Marie, then for a non-profit research foundation in Kingston, and later as a freelance archaeological consultant. Unlike most who write books on archaeology, Nick has no pretensions to being a great academic or noted scientist. Nevertheless, he has successfully completed hundreds of archaeological assessment projects in Ontario, some of which were even a little bit interesting. After decades in the trenches, he finally got around to getting a piece of paper in 2003, earning an MA in Archaeology and Heritage (distinction) from the University of Leicester. When he's not riding his 1970s Moto Guzzi motorbikes or hiking in the UK, Nick runs a small, active archaeological consulting company in eastern Ontario. He has written two previous books (see over), a number of articles for 'RealClassic' motorcycle magazine, and is a regular contributor to many on-line forums.
