This is the BLACK AND WHITE paperback edition of the book. It is also available available in color paperback and Kindle editions.

Have you ever thought about what the world would be like without mountains?

Mountains aren't just a fun place to visit - they change the weather patterns and long-term climate, and even affect how species evolve. This book tells the story of how mountains grow and erode, how the oldest species on Earth relies on mountains, and how the rise of the Himalaya may have cooled Earth's climate. This is real, cutting-edge science, written for kids. Best of all, at the end of the book, activities bring the science to life: experiment with dry ice, build and erode mountains made from play-dough and dirt, and watch as freezing water expands to crack the container it's in.

Judith Hubbard is a geology professor with a Ph.D. from Harvard University and a B.S. from Caltech - and also two young children. She started the In Depth Science series with the goal of making college-level science accessible to kids as young as eight years old.

Review:

"Educational and informative, ... excellent for children. Can be used for interactive sessions in classrooms and school libraries, for reference, [or] as a bedtime storybook. ... There is so much more to mountains than just being part of scenery or a landscape, and this book explains it perfectly." Mamta Madhavan, Readers' Favorite (5 stars)
