Unraveling Cancer describes the forces that cause cancer development and outlines a framework for understanding how, in health, the body is able to eliminate cells that have cancer-causing mutations. This book describes how lifestyle habits can interfere with these protective mechanisms, and explains how we can most effectively modify our habits and greatly lower the risk of developing cancer. The same forces that cause cancer also promote its growth and transition into an aggressive, metastatic disease. Making lifestyle and dietary changes even after a cancer diagnosis can reduce cancer growth, enhance treatment, and help prevent recurrence. Unraveling Cancer focuses on modifiable risk factors that can promote or help prevent cancer, even for persons with a high genetic risk of disease, such as women with BRCA mutations. These modifiable risk factors include foods and their preparation methods which impact cancer risk. This book describes better ways of preparing foods that provide for better health and lower cancer risk. The book explains which types of exercise are effective and those that do not lower cancer risk. It provides strategies to lower cancer risk, even if one is unable to exercise. Some cancer risk factors have their greatest impact during growth, and Unraveling Cancer explains how we can protect our children and grandchildren now from developing cancer as adults. Unraveling Cancer instructs not only how to prevent cancer, but to slow its advancement and make chemo and other treatments more effective. The book describes how to prepare for chemo to make it more effective in killing cancer cells, less toxic, and have fewer and less intense side effects. The book provides hope for cancer patients and their loved ones by giving them ways to enhance treatment and empowering them to participate in improving their health.

From the Back Cover:
"I have read, highlighted and made notes in the margins of Unraveling Cancer. I'm impressed by the extent of research and documentation put into this book. As a medical community, we have vastly underutilized the impact of "food as toxins" as well "foods as medicine" and the profound health inducing and disease preventative effects of physical activity, sound sleep, the stress response, etc. Dr. Lewis' explanation of the science that defines the most effective uses of these strategies has empowered me as a physician to more effectively equip my patients with proactive healing strategies that assist them in taking better control of their health. As an integrative medicine physician with a keen interest in prevention as well as the underlying immunology and systemic disequilibrium that allows cancer to flourish, I sincerely appreciate Dr.Lewis' insights into the causes and treatment of cancer. His review of the incredible body of scientific literature supporting these findings helps validate the implementation of these evidence-based healing strategies at an academic medical center such as ours. For that I applaud him. I very much appreciate his work in helping expand our collective understanding of cancer, why it occurs, and how to stop it."

Dr. Clayton Bell, MD, Center for Integrative Health, University of Tennessee Medical Center Cancer Institute
About the Author:
Dr. Lewis is a practicing physician, board certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. He is a researcher, author, epidemiologist and developer of several patented medical devices. His research focuses on the prevention of chronic disease and the restoration of health after disease diagnosis. Dr. Lewis led the first research group to demonstrate that elevations in serum homocysteine levels, caused by marginal levels of the B vitamin folate, increases the risk for coronary artery disease. This work was cited by the Institute of Medicine for their recommendations for setting higher levels of folic acid fortification of processed foods, a change that resulted in a reduced incidence of heart disease, neural tube defects, and in some cancers in the United States. In collaboration with the Scheie Eye Institute and Columbia University, Dr. Lewis helped identify the cause of a severe form of recessive retinitis pigmentosa, RP-14 as being caused by a mutation in the TULP1 gene.  Dr. Lewis now focuses translational research in the area of preventive medicine and health, the translation of basic research into practical application for disease prevention and treatment. In the book "Enteroimmunology" he explained the mechanisms by which thegastrointestinal immune system promotes systemic inflammation and thedevelopment of chronic diseases, including diseases and disorders of the central nervous system. In "Unraveling Cancer" he reveals the mechanisms in the cell that cause cancer and describes how we can prevent those processes.
