Prologue The Vancouver Police were worried. They held a suspect in a jewel robbery that had occurred two weeks ago, but had no evidence that would allow them to keep him in custody. Time was running out. If they couldn't recover the jewels soon, they would have to let the man go. Once he was free, they knew he would dispose of the jewels. The police consulted Dr. Otto Maximilian Langsner, a mind reader who had done covert work for the British government. They told him about the jewel heist and their suspect. The problem was that they had no proof and no jewels. Would Dr. Langsner be willing to "read" the suspect's mind and tellthem what he was able to find out? Dr. Langsner agreed, and was escorted to the interview room where the police had placed the man. Dr. Langsner quietly entered the room and sat in a chair.He said nothing to the suspect and nothing to the guard who sat beside the man. Dr. Langsner just sat and watched the prisoner. The prisoner spoke to Dr. Langsner, but got no response. He swore at him, but by nary a flinch or a twitch of the eye did Dr. Langsner even acknowledge that he had heard the man. The suspect raised his arm as if to hit Dr. Langsner, but the guard warned him off. After 10 minutes, the suspect began to fidget. After 20, even the guard was getting spooked. Dr. Langsner continued to sit quietly, hardly moving. His eyes never left the suspect. After 30 minutes, Dr. Langsner turned to the guard, startling him with his sudden movement after being still for so long. He said that he was finished and asked the guard to let the detectives know that he was ready to leave. The guard signalled, and the door to the interview room opened. Dr. Langsner stepped out of the room. "I can tell you where you will find the jewels," he said.
