Grade 7-12-- A thorough account of how and why more Native Americans now live in cities than on reservations. Fixico begins by detailing a number of Indian societies throughout the Americas that had their own cities well before the arrival of the Europeans. Federal policies that swung from attempts to completely assimilate the Indian to recognition of Native Americans' unique cultures are explained. Many well-chosen black-and-white and full-color photographs humanize the text, as do the boxed excerpts from fiction by Indian authors on the urban experience and firsthand accounts by people who relocated. Individuals offer definitions of what an Indian is today and discuss the prejudice encountered in the cities and the inevitable culture shock. An eight-page spread reveals the varieties of contemporary Indian artwork, but is out of context in this discussion. The bibliography is slight but well chosen.
