Grade 1-3 --The nursery rhyme has been rewritten and extended as a backdrop for this artist's showcase. Underhill's elaborate paintings feature accurately rendered animals in human dress, engaged in human activities: in "3, 4,/Away we roar," tigers in helmets and protective gear bounce about on motorcross bicycles while a passerby ferociously licks a popsicle; for "9, 10,/Toys to mend," four koalas gravely assemble a model railroad; a pooch with bowler and walking stick pours himself a dram from a hip flask while watching an equestrian event for "13, 14,/ Dogs a'sporting." The backgrounds are filled with the sort of small, precise detail through which some browsers love to sort, but because the humor has a rather sophisticated edge, and the numbers in text and pictures don't match, the book's usefulness and appeal to children are limited. --John Peters, New York Public Library
