From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2-An insipid piece of didacticism. An entire kingdom lives in fear of a giant, even though no one has actually seen him. After several unsuccessful attempts to destroy the supposed ogre, the princess suggests giving him a gift and "'being nice.'" A glassblower offers a crystal ball, which, in the kindhearted giant's grateful hands, sends out a magical light and melody. He asks that the object be kept where everyone can see it. "It will remind all of us that we must live peacefully together." The story and the theme are delivered in a saccharine and heavy-handed manner. The drawings are rich in color and texture, but lacking in form and perspective. The portrayal of the giant as a soft-hearted oaf is effective, but not enough to save this flawed effort. Tolerance and peace may be worthwhile themes, but this presentation is disappointing.
