We follow her difficulties in finding a job in a world of lechers, wife-beaters, and con men. Her first night in New York City lands her in jail simply for being out alone after dark. Juxtaposed against Laura's struggles is the life of her wealthy friend, Flora Livingston, who ends up as a trophy in a destructive, loveless marriage. And there's a surprise character, unusual for 19th-century literature, whose startling secret is revealed to Laura at the novel's end.
