At the age of 53, Lawrence A. Decker, Ph.D. underwent quadruple coronary bypass surgery, just like his father before him. His cardiologist told him that the problem was obviously genetic, and that there was little he could do except watch his diet, exercise and take medication. Since Dr. Decker had been trying unsuccessfully for years to follow his doctor's advice, he decided to use his psychological training to look deeply into his own personality makeup to see why he was such a tough customer when it came to following his doctor's orders, and how he may have contributed to his heart condition. Upon honest reflection he found that his personality was filled with distortions in his self-image, thinking patterns, belief system, feeling states, and behavior. He coined the term "Secretly-Sensitive Personality" to describe himself, which he defined as a disorder in the way in which he was being.
Dr. Decker set out to find ways to change himself, and discovered that his personality was based on faulty perceptions. He realized that he was much different from the person he imagined himself to be. He learned to get in touch with his essential self, which was based on intuitive, spiritual and creative aspects of himself which had been submerged
His book, A Change of Heart, is an exploration of his own journey towards self-awareness and healing, and a guide to other heart patients and their families who seek to understand and overcome their own illnesses. Calling upon his more than twenty years of experience as a psychotherapist, Dr. Decker encourages heart patients in replacing hopelessness and despair with empowerment and strength, and helps heart patients to reestablish power over their own lives.
