About the Author:

Nancy Byrd Turner, writer and lecturer, was born in 1880 in Boydton, Virginia. She wrote several novels and books of poetry, including STAR IN A WELL, A RIBAND ON MY REIN, and SILVER SATURDAY. "When Young Melissa Sweeps" appeared in MAGPIE LANE, a collection of poems for children, published in 1927. Three years later Turner received The Golden Rose, the highest award given by the New England Poetry Society.

Debrah Santini has illustrated a number of children's books, including THE LAST DANCE by Carmen Agra Deedy and Ruth Tiller's WISHING. She received her MFA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and is a member of the faculty of West Georgia College in Carrollton, GA.
