PreS-Gr 2-A totally unsuccessful introduction to France and the French language. The rhyming text is in English, with French words substituted in appropriate spots (for example, a beach scene reads, ``I play on la plage/With crowds of amis''). Additional French words are used in the illustrations and listed on the bottom of each page, with definitions and pronunciations. The rhymes are awkward, forced, and inconsistent. Punctuation is atrocious, and many of the pronunciations are incorrect. The selection of French words seems arbitrary. The story revolves around a boy's day; however, breakfast receives two full pages, while lunch and dinner are ignored. Days of the week, months, and numbers are included, but colors, shapes, body parts, animals, seasons, weather, and clothing are absent. Consequently, the book is extremely limited in its usefulness. Finally, the full-color illustrations are slapdash and unappealing. Children interested in learning French, and their parents, will be better served by Katherine Farris's Let's Speak French! (Viking, 1993) or Heather Amery's First Thousand Words in French (Usborne, 1980).-Ann W. Moore, Guilderland Public Library, NY
