Gr 9 Up-For thoughtful high school students, this selection of current views on serious problems facing our society presents much stimulating material. In each chapter, essays discuss people's motivation to behave ethically, whether there is a lack of professional ethics in America, whether such practices benefit society, whether modern biomedical practices are ethical, and how to promote ethical behavior. The selections are just long enough to define the problem, give an example or two, and, in some cases, prescribe solutions. This approach provides access to a wide range of opinions on a variety of related topics, but students will have to read further to get a real sense of the depth of thought necessary to address these issues. For example, one of the six major sections addresses biomedical ethics without duplicating a single source quoted in Biomedical Ethics (Greenhaven, 1994) from the ``Opposing Viewpoints'' series. That title uses a similar format but delves into the subject more deeply. The selections here are by well-known commentators and the introductory essays supply context without passing judgment on their opinions. Format and typeface are somewhat larger than the ``Opposing Viewpoints'' books; the effective use of white space makes this series much easier to read. There are no illustrations; magazine-style ``pull-quotes'' draw attention to the major points. An extensive bibliography, annotated list of periodicals, organizations to contact, and index are included.-Jonathan Betz-Zall, Sno-Isle Regional Library System, Edmonds, WA
