This book focuses on the design of a Windows 2000 environment, and how to develop an effective design and migration plan. You are lead through the process of developing a design plan by reviewing each pertinent issue, and provides expert advice on how to evaluate each issue as it applies to the your particular environment. Practical examples illustrate all these issues. The book begins with detailed coverage of how to evaluate the current network environment - what issues need to be considered, and how to evaluate those issues. Next, the process of developing a migration plan is explored. The book then examines how to develop a Windows 2000 environment, sharing the insight gained by actual deployments from RDP members. Next, the book discusses how to evaluate both the migration and development plans, making sure that all potential pitfalls have been avoided. It closes with a discussion of the future of Active Directory.

From the Author:
I wanted to write this book because there is a lot of confusion about Active Directory and how it works. Too often books are written based on theory, and, of course, they are always written based on the author's knowledge of the subject. Since Windows 2000 is so new, very few authors have actual experience. I wrote this book because I've had experience working with Windows 2000 early adopters since 1998 in Beta 2. I've seen the trials and struggles--successes and failures--of many Windows 2000 implementations, so I wanted to leverage my experience to benefit the readers.

I also wanted to make it practical--not just "here's how it should work," but "here's how it works and what to watch out for." I wrote it as if I were training myself for the first time. I have actual examples, case studies, and related experience to explain and prove the points made. If there is one thing that sets this book apart from the many others with similar titles is that it is indeed a "Practical Guide to Active Directory Design and Deployment"--hands on--where the rubber meets the road.
