Born in Palestine before the formation of the State of Israel, educated in an Egypt that was dangerous for a young Jew, he came to America with a few dollars in his pocket and earned a master's degree in Journalism from Syracuse University. He started h is career as a fundraiser for Israel in its infancy, and became a leading organizer of the Israel Bond program in the United States. He graduated to the business world as a co-founder of a number of businesses (several of which were the talk of Wall Stre et) that grew to employ thousands of people.
