About the Author:

Gerry Faust won more hearts than games during his time as Notre Dame's head coach in the early 1980s, going 30-26-1 in the five years before the hiring of Lou Holtz. The legendary prep coach compiled a 174-17-2 record at Cincinnati's Moeller High School before succeeding Dan Devine to become Notre Dame's 24th head coach. Faust later coached at the University of Akron before retiring in 1994.

John Heisler has served as Notre Dame's sports information director for 16 years. The South Bend, Indiana, native originally joined the Notre Dame staff in 1978 and was promoted to associate director in 1982. A graduate of the Missouri School of Journalism, Heisler assisted Lou Holtz on his 1989 book The Fighting Spirit and edited the 2001 book Quotable Rockne.

Love, a writer for the Akron Beacon Journal, earned his BA in journalism from California State University at Chico. He is a member of Sigma Delta Chi, a society of professional journalists.

Bob Logan is a longtime Chicago Tribune and Daily Herald writer who grew up in Philadelphia listening to Notre Dame radio broadcasts during Frank Leahy's dynasty years. He covered the Notre Dame beat during Lou Holtz's championship 1988 season.
