9781586170172: The God Who Loves You: Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

God's love is the subject of Peter Kreeft's imaginative and thoughtful book (a revised and updated version of his book Knowing the Truth of God's Love). With unusual clarity, Kreeft points out that the man or woman who begins to glimpse the God who is Creator, Redeemer, and Lover of our souls, will never be the same. He describes Scripture as God's love story and then tells why divine love is the answer to our deepest problems and the fulfillment of our deepest desires.

Posing the hard questions about love that rankle the heart, Peter Kreeft never settles for easy answers. He exposes today's superficial attitudes about love to lead people to a deeper understanding of what it means to be loved by God, addressing these issues and many more:

How can I really know God's love for me? If God is love, why do bad things happen to good people?

Book Description Ignatius Press November 2004, 2004. Paper Back. Book Condition: New. By Peter Kreeft's reckoning, 'the Bible does not tell us what we already know. For instance, not once does it argue for God's existence. But it does tell us what we do not already know: the nature of God. We do not know that 'God is love' by reason or experience or history or science or logic or common sense. That is a shock.' According to Kreeft, God's love is shattering. The God Who Loves You, a revised and updated version of his earlier book Knowing the Truth of God's Love, is Kreeft's attempt to elicit love from love in order to hasten himself and his readers to be lovers-namely, saints. Being Peter Kreeft, he likes lists, and chapter one kicks it off with what Kreeft considers the most profound ideas he's ever had. There's nothing terribly original here, and Kreeft sees himself clearly enough to know he is no more than a mediocre lover, but even a 'plodding pilgrim' (maybe especially a plodding pilgrim) can come to know the revolutionary tenets of what God's love means. Subsequent chapters define love by way of Greek and Hebrew sources then discuss it in terms of systematic, moral, practical, and political theologies. Sounds a tad dry, but it isn't. Mr. Kreeft's erudition is worn lightly and of the almost fifty books Peter Kreeft has given himself to, this one is just as clear, stimulating, and-dare we say-illuminating.
