Thsi book has comprehensive coverage of 177 of the most infamous assassins, serial killers, frauds, gangsters, murderers, terrorists, thieves, and traitors in American history."American Villains" explores the lives, deeds and punishments of 177 of the most infamous villains of our time. What makes this set unique is that it focuses on U.S. criminals who are not generally covered in American biographical surveys. While there are many books that cover fictional villains in videogames, comic-books, and movies, few cover real villains of history in one convenient set.Scope and coverage - the 177 essays in American Villains cover a broad range of personages, including Assassins and would-be Assassins (John Wilkes Booth, John Hinckley Jr., James Earl Ray, Lee Harvey Oswald), Corrupt Politicians (Byron Looper, Joseph Weil), Cult Leaders (Jim Jones, David Berg, Charles Manson), Gangsters and Associates (Ma Barker, Al Capone, John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd), Murderers (Lizzie Borden, Mark David Chapman, Scott Peterson, Karla Faye Tucker), Outlaws and Gunslingers (William H. Bonney, Butch Cassidy, Bob & Emmett Dalton, Jesse James), Political Rebels and Revolutionaries (William Clarke Quantrill, Anastase Vonsiatksy), Scientists and Doctors (Larry C. Ford, Linda Burfield Hazzard), Serial Killers (David Berkowitz, Ted Bundy, Albert De Salvo, Aileen Wuomos), Terrorists (D.B. Cooper, Timothy McVeigh, Eric Rudolph) and Traitors and Spies (Benedict Arnold, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, Tokyo Rose).Organization and format - the essays in this set are approximately 1,000 words in length and are arranged alphabetically. Each essay begins with ready-reference information, including: Name of Villain; Identity (e.g., Spree murderer, Gangster); Born (date and place of birth); Died (date and place of birth); Also known as (aliases, nicknames, full and birth names); Major offenses (crimes); Active (period of greatest offenses); Locale (where operated) and Sentence (years in prison, other punishment). From Booklist:
Focusing on women who have made significant contributions in directing on the American professional stage of the last century, Fliotsos and Vierow offer a compact work that fills a void in the annals of American theater history and scholarship. They start with a substantial introduction that features discussions of the concept of the director in Western theater, the role of women managers, and women directors in the American theater and an overview of gender issues in the theatrical world. Studies of 50 American women stage directors follow, each consisting of a short biography, career chronology, review excerpts, characterization of the director’s work, and representative directing credits. Each appraisal is followed by a list of sources consulted, which will enable further study. The entries are in alphabetical order. More than half of the entrants continue to maintain a presence on the current American theater scene and, it is hoped, will continue to do so well into this century. Among the contemporary directors listed are Maria Irene Fornes, Ellen Stewart, Susan Stroman, Julie Taymor, and Mary Zimmerman. Minnie Madern Fiske, Eva Le Gallienne, and Antoinette Perry, for whom the Tony Awards are named, are among the women directors listed from earlier in the century. Also found in the volume are a chronology of women directors arranged by date of birth, a list of women nominees and winners of the Tony Award for direction, and a general bibliography. At the center of the book are black-and-white photographs of 39 of the directors studied. This will be a welcome addition to any performing arts or women’s history collection. --Carolyn Mulac
From School Library Journal:
Grade 9 Up—These essays first appeared in Carl L. Bankston's Notorious Lives (Salem, 2007), but several of the entries have been updated. The concise biographies of 177 disreputable Americans begin with essential background and then describe the subjects' criminal activities; punishment, if any; and lasting effect. An immense variety of wrongdoings is addressed in the profiles, which cover individuals from the 18th century to today. Subjects include Richard Girnt Butler, official spokesperson for the Aryan Nations; pirate Rachel Wall; mafia leader Frank Costello; and such well-known figures as Benedict Arnold, John Wilkes Booth, Al Capone, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, and Jeffrey Dahmer. Black-and-white photographs and primary-source excerpts accompany many entries. Back matter includes an annotated Web site list and a chronological listing of entries. This diverse set will supplement research in areas of history, psychology, sociology, law, and criminal justice.—Beth McGuire, Fannett-Metal School District, Willow Hill, PA
