From Booklist:
Salem Press expands its coverage of health and medicine with this encyclopedia covering all aspects of cancer. The editorial board and contributors are physicians, scientists, or other health-care practitioners. They have prepared 835 alphabetical entries covering diseases, conditions, procedures, medications, and social issues related to the various cancers afflicting humans. Entries range in length from one to five pages and provide concise overviews in an accessible format. An entry for a specific cancer includes alternate names for the disease, a definition, risk factors, etiology and disease process, incidence, symptoms, screening and diagnosis, treatment and therapy, prognosis, prevention, and outcomes. Entries for drugs are mostly for drug classes, with a few for specific drugs. There are also entries for cancer in ethnic groups, for carcinogens, and for topics such as Cell phones, Clinical trials, and Occupational exposures and cancer. Social issues such as Caregivers and caregiving, Family history and risk assessment, and Financial issues are covered, too. Medical and surgical procedures and techniques, major treatment centers, organizations, and topics such as alternative therapies and nutrition in both treatment and prevention also appear. All entries have references for further information and cross-references to related material. Volume 4 includes a glossary, a bibliography, and appendixes providing lists of organizations, cancer centers and hospitals, and support groups; a master list of carcinogens; and comprehensive lists of drugs by generic and trade names. There are numerous tables with statistics, survival rates, and other relevant information, as well as black-and-white photographs. A unique feature of this set is the included access to the Salem Health Database with the complete text of the set as well as that of Magill’s Medical Guide. There is an access code in volume 1 that allows unlimited usage through 2111. The database has color illustrations. Although the print Salem Health: Cancer lacks the color illustrations and more accessible language of The Gale Encyclopedia of Cancer (2nd ed., 2005), it is a good basic resource, and the database access makes it attractive for libraries with small budgets. --Barbara Bibel
From School Library Journal:
Few subjects are as arresting as cancer. For patients the draw is obvious, but for researchers, students, and the general public, malignant unchecked cell growth fascinates and intrigues. All audiences desire quick access to the most current information. This title aims to satisfy all but the expert in providing a concise overview of cancer biology, causes, therapies, and related social issues. Knight (Mount Holyoke Coll.), who previously edited Salem's Encyclopedia of Genetics, shepherds a flock of practitioner, researcher, and medical writer contributors. A typical entry for a procedure begins with a concise definition, then covers the uses of the procedure, how it is performed, and the risks involved. Medical acronyms, (e.g., CT, MRI) are spelled out. The 800 entries are signed and list references for further information, including books and journal articles from the last decade, as well as web sites and organizations. BOTTOM LINE This title is similar in scope to The Gale Encyclopedia of Cancer, which has about 500 entries. Few libraries need both titles; however, since both are also available online, a library may choose to carry one in print and the other online, or may choose the more recently produced version if current information is needed. Gale's color illustrations tend to add to the textual content, whereas Salem's black-and-white illustrations often appear to serve merely as graphic elements. Recommended for all libraries not already holding the Gale title. [Available online through Salem Health.]—Teresa R. Faust, Vermont Dept. of Libs., Berlin
