Little Mouse plans to make her birthday the best ever not only for her but for her entire family. When Papa asks her what she would like to do on her special day, Little Mouse says she would like to go to the beach and build sand castles. (Her baby brother is thrilled.)  Later, Little Mouse asks for a picnic by the river. (Papa loves a picnic by the river.) Finally, Little Mouse asks to fly kites in the meadow. (Mama loves flying kites in the meadow.) Jeanne Modesitt's endearing story about a little mouse's thoughtfulness is adorably illustrated by Robin Spowart.

About the Author:

Jeanne Modesitt and Robin Spowart are a husband-and-wife team who have written and illustrated many books for children. Robin has also illustrated books by other authors, including Baby Day and Love Me, Love You both by Susan Heyboer O'Keefe. Ms. Modesitt and Mr. Spowart live in Kanab, Utah.

From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-K–It's Little Mouse's birthday, and she and her family are planning a day out. First, she wants to go to the beach and build sand castles because that's what her baby brother loves to do most. Then, she chooses a picnic by the river because that's Papa's favorite family activity. Finally, they fly kites in the meadow because that's what Mama likes to do. Awaiting Little Mouse at home is strawberry cake, the prettiest one she's ever seen, and something she loves. That's why we picked it! exclaims her brother. The story is heavy-handed; the message is overexplained, and while the author appears to have intended Little Mouse to be sweet and selfless, she comes across as obsequious. The blurry pastel illustrations, in which all the mice are constantly smiling or looking adoringly at one another, contribute to the too-sugary feel of the book. Robert Kraus's Whose Mouse Are You? (S & S, 1970) and Kevin Henkes's Chrysanthemum (HarperCollins, 1991) both describe strong family love without the cheese of Modesitt's work.–Daisy Porter, San Jose Public Library, CA
