This scattershot collection of wildly disparate quality brings together 30 years' worth of western stories by Pronzini, whose fiction typically runs to a more detective vein. Rather than the bloody payoff of your usual western yarns, most of these accordingly feature a twist come tales' end--satisfying enough when it works, groan inspiring when it doesn't. Sure, there's a gunslinger or two and plenty enough frontier gumshoeing to keep both western and crime fans going, but the standout stories don't fall handily into either niche. In "The Coffin Trimmer," a ghastly newcomer with a shifting visage takes a job at the funeral parlor, much to the mounting dread of the townsfolk. In the title story, a Umatilla Indian animal services worker named Jill Quarter-Moon rescues a Doberman from starvation, and the two develop an instant rapport that turns lifesaving when they stumble upon a massive drug-smuggling operation in the Pacific Northwest.
