About the Author:
Tim Gordon is a 1980 graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts. He returned to NCSA in 1990 to complete a master's degree in Saxophone Performance. In the Charlotte area, Tim has established himself as a freelance recording artist, teacher and touring musician, working with and traveling extensively with national artists such as The Four Tops, The Temptations, The Spinners, Aretha Franklin, Frankie Valle and The Four Seasons and The Count Basie Orchestra. Local activities include: Broadway shows, large and small ensemble performances, and with regional and national jazz and R&B artists.

Tim has taught at the college level at Davidson College, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and is presently teaching at Winthrop University. He has served as a clinician at many jazz festivals and educational programs throughout North America.

Tim is a Grammy-nominated artist and has recorded extensively with regional artists. National recording projects include work with The Four Tops, Maurice Williams, The Impressions, Anthony Hamilton, Queen Latifa, Bonnie Bramlett and The Big Dipper. Television and video credits include The Young Indians Jones, The Four Tops Live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and the Grammy-nominated The Nature of Drumming with Jim Brock.
Milton DeLugg's career spanned his performances with such diverse artists as Al Jolson and arranging and conducting music for Frank Loesser and Morey Amsterdam. He worked frequently in radio and TV on such assignments as The Fred Allen Show, The Jack Paar Show, and for a short while, The Johnny Carson Show, leading the show-bands favored at that time by the hosts. By the early 1960s, he had an excellent reputation in the industry for reliability and was much in demand. Milton's song-writing credits included the song "Orange Colored Sky," which was a major hit for Nat Cole. We asked him to assemble a band of all-stars to create this unique album.
Billy Butterfield whose career prior to becoming the New York choice for recording sessions and big band work was with the Bob Crosby Bobcats, the Artie Shaw, Les Brown and Benny Goodman bands of the time. His solo on Shaw's "Stardust" came to have a legendary renown. Billy's final work was as a member of the World's Greatest Jazz Band, where he shared trumpet chores with Yank Lawson.
Phil Bodner was the busiest reed man of the space-age pop era, playing on hundreds of recordings produced in New York studios between the mid-1950s and early 70s. He brought with him superb technical proficiency on his instrument - in his case, the whole gamut of woodwinds. He performed with Benny Goodman's small combo in the 1950s and participated in countless small group jazz recordings. It would take many paragraphs to truly define his role in the N.Y. scene. He was the `go-to guy' when the gig called for clarinet expertise. Bodner left us on Feb.24th, 2008
Our thythm section is led by Hank Jones, on piano, the `dean of jazz pianists,' who was still plying his craft in 2009, at 91 years of age. We first encountered Hank on an MMO record in 1951 when he was chosen to head an all-star rhythm section for us, doing an album of Gershwin melodies. On our fourth rhythm background album, Hank inherited the mantle of `house pianist,' thereafter performing on the many albums we made, when he was available for recording. His schedule saw him touring and recording almost continually.
Tony Mottola was one of the most sought-after and respected studio musicians in the music industry. He worked extensively with Frank Sinatra and Perry Como. He also performed with Doc Severinsen's Tonight Show Orchestra. He composed music for the films Running On Empty and Violated in 1953. Mottola recorded dozens of solo albums on guitar. Mottola was born on April 18, 1918 and passed away on August 9th, 2004 at 86 years of age.
Milt Hinton, the band's bassist, had an extraordinary career in music beginning in the `20s and `30s when he worked as a free-lancer in Chicago. He performed with Art Tatum, Eddie South, Jabbo Smith, and in 1936 joined the Cab Calloway Band, which featured fellow players Chu Berry, Cozy Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Illinois Jacquet, Jonah Jones, Ike Quebec, Ben Webster and Danny Barker. Milt has seen his career span a period of over seventy years, and includes recording with Branford Marsalis in this era. Hinton is the most recorded jazz musician of all time, having appeared on over 1,174 recordings per The Jazz Discography. He also graced the rhythm section of our first MMO album, in company with Barry Galbraith, Nat Pierce and Osie Johnson. Milt was also a great photographer, carrying his camera to every session and documenting the proceedings. He left us in 2000 at the age of ninety.
Don Lamond, our drummer, attended Peabody Conservatory in Philadelphia in the early `40s. He subsequently played with the bands of Sonny Dunham and Boyd Raebum at the outset of his career. He replaced Dave Tough in the Woody Herman big band "First Herd," until its dissolution at the end of 1946. He briefly freelanced with Chas, Parker, until he rejoined the `Second Herd' where he remained until its dissolution in 1949. In the `50s and `60s he performed with Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Johnny Smith, Benny Goodman, Ruby Braff, Sauter-Finegan, Sonny Stitt, Johnny Guarnieri, Jack Teagarden, Quincy Jones, George Russell and Bob Crosby along others. Don left us in 2003 at the age of 83.
