From School Library Journal:
Gr 2-4-This series profiles five influential people, chronicling their achievements and highlighting the circumstances that led them to become "history makers." The text is large, making it easy on the eyes. While the narratives are not especially exciting, they are straightforward, flow well, and have clear language and short sentences. The captioned color and black-and-white photographs are set against a muted color palette, and the design is clean. A time line travels on the bottom of each page, providing a quick reference. The words in the glossary are not set apart in the text, which might be problematic for vocabulary building. Nonetheless, these books provide solid basic biographical information, giving historical context for the subjects' lives while adding enough personal details to make the famous figures interesting and accessible to a young audience.α(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist:
Young readers receive an early introduction to the venerable WWII figure in this entry into the History Makers series. Large, understandable text presents pivotal points in Churchill’s life, starting with his birth at Blenheim Palace and childhood spent at boarding school, and continuing with his military career and entry into politics. The focus, however, is on the rise of Hitler, Churchill’s role as prime minister during WWII, and his unyielding inspiration against the Germans during the Battle of Britain. Archival photos on every page and a running time line across the bottom of the book, which places Churchill’s major life events in context with other important historical events from the same time period, encourage students to think about historical research. This accessible title shows how Churchill was both a maker—and shaker—of world history. Grades 3-5. --Angela Leeper
