Leif’s older brothers and sister have already struck out on their own, leaving Leif alone to carry on the family farm. Leif loves their remote farm on Crane Creek and the life it offers, but Pa is relentlessly harsh and demanding, always finding fault and humiliating him. When Leif makes a trek into town in the dead of winter to procure supplies, he meets Anna, a distant neighbor, and together they dream of making a life as farmers. If only his father weren’t so hard to deal with. Leif discovers an old broken-down shay that he plans to fix up and surprise Anna with, but Pa ridicules him and calls it a waste of time. Pa’s attitude finally provokes Leif to escape to the big city, where his sister lives, to find his way. What he discovers there and what he learns about himself enables him to do what has to be done. LEIF'S JOURNEY is the story of a young man struggling to find his way . . . with his father, his new love, his need to venture forth and explore a wider world, and, ultimately, to manhood.

From School Library Journal:
Gr 8 Up—With his older siblings gone to make their lives in the city, Leif is the only one left to carry on the family farm in 1881 Minnesota. During a trek for supplies in a terrible winter storm, Leif meets Anna and the two begin to dream of a life together on a farm of their own. But, life is not easy and Leif's Pa is a hard man. The protagonist has to decide whether to follow his older siblings toward progress or stay and fight for his father's respect at home. Along the way, he learns who he is, where his father came from, and what his future holds. Well written and historically interesting, Leif's coming-of-age journey will resonate with teens. Even though the novel's setting and the character's way of life may be vastly different from that of many young adults today, readers will understand Leif's desire to be seen and treated like a man. Parent/child conflict drives the story and shows that while some things have changed greatly, others are still the same. VERDICT A good choice for general purchases or to enhance historical fiction collections.—Elizabeth Speer, Cisco College, TX
