* First account by any Congressman to divulge the truth about what really happened in briefings with key Bush Administration figures. * Praise from Minority Leader and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and many other distinguished members of Congress. * The full story of how war hawks deceived the public, media and Congress; same people still pushing for US troops in Iraq again. * Tells how war and occupation destroyed Iraqi institutions, replacing them with an inept, corrupt, sectarian, pro-Iran regime. * Most Americans want to leave Iraq alone. US intervention helped enemies and extremists, weakened allies and moderates. * Proposes reforms to require full public disclosure of intelligence, and a clear mandate from Congress before any major military action. * Will appeal to fans of authors like Rachel Maddow (Drift), Isikoff and Corn (Hubris), Scahill (Blackwater), and Woodward (Bush at War).

About the Author:
Joseph M. Hoeffel has served in elected public office for 25 years, and was a member of Congress from 1999 through 2004. His long career qualifies him as an experienced political practitioner and commentator. Hoeffel’s knowledge of international relations, congressional practices and intelligence reform provides the perspective for his writing and his regular presence in print, radio and television media. Hoeffel graduated from Boston University and Temple University Law School.
Review:
Congressman Hoeffel offers his readers a candid and unsparing insider's account of one of the most consequential Congressional votes in modern history - the fateful decision to authorize war with Iraq. This wrenching and detailed assessment of the misleading case for war presented to the American people provides an important new perspective on the rush to invade Iraq. -- House Minority Leader and former Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, (D-CA)

This very important book will make readers understand that dedicated and intelligent Members of Congress - like author Hoeffel - thought their vote on the Iraq War was right but with hindsight are willing to admit the vote was wrong and analyze why it was wrong. If we can't learn from history - we are doomed to repeat it. --Former House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt, (D-MO)

The Iraq Lie: How the White House Sold the War is centered on the fundamental illness of Washington: the absence of accountability by our leaders, no matter how you feel about the Iraq War. Hoeffel calls for both the political courage and transparency needed for Congress to focus on facts, not political expediencies, to do its job. And, sadly, he leaves us with an awareness that even in a decision to take our nation to war, Diogenes continues to carry his lantern in our Capitol. - Former Congressman and retired Admiral Joe Sestak, (D-PA) --Former Congressman and retired Admiral Joe Sestak, (D-PA)

Every American who was drawn to support America's attack upon Iraq needs to read Congressman Hoeffel's honest, straight-forward reappraisal of the vote on the Iraq War resolution. Congressman Hoeffel grappled with the decision to go to war. His reflection marks a courageous call to conscience by a man who loves America.
- Former Congressman Dennis Kucinich, (D-OH)

This book should be a reminder to the American people that no administration or Congress should commit young men and women to war based on manipulated intelligence the people must demand the truth!
- Congressman Walter Jones, (R-NC)

This book serves as an incredible chronicle of the debate surrounding the worst foreign policy disaster in our nation's history. It is a well-timed reminder of the consequences of war as we work to achieve a more peaceful and secure world. --Congresswoman Barbara Lee, (D-CA)

Joe Hoeffel was well respected by members of both parties in Congress and his book shows why: Here is a thoughtful, insightful and compelling account of the run-up to the war in Iraq told by someone who was there. It is as important as it is page-turning, and a good primer for those studying the Congress and issues of war and peace.
- Congressman Adam Schiff, (D-CA)

I worked with Joe Hoeffel in Congress to demand answers from the Bush Administration for its policies leading up to the invasion of Iraq and its aftermath. Joe provides a well-informed insider account of that effort. The book discloses the truth about our involvement in Iraq and simultaneously holds both the Bush Administration and Congress accountable for the debacle in Iraq and demonstrates how to prevent such a colossal failure from reoccurring.
- Former Congressman William Delahunt, (D-MA)

Joe Hoeffel, as a Member of Congress, voted for the Iraq War. In this thoroughly researched book, Hoeffel takes us inside the White House and behind the scenes to document the extent of the Bush Administration's lies that dragged our nation into its biggest foreign policy blunder since WWII. Unlike the men and women who sent us to war, Hoeffel has the courage to admit he made a mistake, and states if he could take back one vote in his long career of public service, it would be his Yes for war in Iraq. That's a powerful admission, and this book tells us why. Hoeffel deserves a large audience, to prevent us from making the mistakes of Iraq again.
--Peter Van Buren, author, We Meant Well: How I Lost the Battle for the Hearts and Minds of the Iraqi People
