Virginia DeFriest's story begns in a small university town in California in the 1920s and proceeds to her marriage in 1950. It takes a surprising turn when her husband Jim, an oil executive, asks how she'd feel about leaving the suburban family life in Los Angeles to 'live in the shadow of a golden pagoda and have an amah for the kids.' That led to more than ten years of overseas postings in Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Ghana, and Sierra Leone. Though there had been no pagodas, there had been more servants than just an amah, and a very comfortable--often exciting--life. When they returned to America they foudn it difficult to settle down, even while living on an island off Westport,Connecticut, and in 1969 the DeFriests returned to Australia, to their 'beloved Melbourne.' Virgina, now an Austlian citizen, lives in Point Lonsdale, Victoria, where she and Jim had spent twenty-five years until his death in 1995. Chapter illustrations by the author
