Nevill Johnson is better known as a painter and photographer than as a writer. However, his autobiography, The Other Side of Six, published in 1983, while garnering excellent reviews, did not receive the acclaim it deserved. Eoin O'Brien, a close friend of Nevill Johnson and literary executor of his estate - who had previously co-authored (with Dickon Hall) Paint the Smell of Grass, a major work on the paintings of Nevill Johnson - has edited the artist's writings in in this volume, for the first time. They include The Other Side of Six, Tractatus Pudicis, a poetic dialogue on the human condition, the foreword to Dublin: The People's City, in which Nevill Johnson introduces his remarkable photographs of a city on the eve of an architectural and cultural decline in the early nineteen-fifties; twenty of these photographs are reproduced in the book. The collection concludes with The Wilby Journal, in which the artist expresses freely his technique of painting and his constant battle to overcome inertia, doubt and the vicissitudes of existence to achieve the one thing that mattered to him, the one thing that he believed he existed for - painting. For the first time, Nevill Johnson (1911 - 1999) Artist, Writer, Photographer provides an intriguing insight into the life, personal circumstances, the beliefs and aesthetic views of one of the most serious and innovative artists of the twentieth century, an artist who portrayed Dublin with such force and originality of expression in painting and photography that it is high time his literary oeuvre be presented for evaluation. Nevill Johnson was one of the most highly rated and sought-after painters in Ireland during these decades. Born in England, Johnson moved to Dublin in the late 1940s, during which time he exhibited regularly at the Victor Waddington Gallery alongside Louis le Brocquy, Colin Middleton, Gerard Dillon and Daniel O'Neill. His photographs of Dublin are regarded as a forceful statement that captured a city before a dramatic architectural and cultural decline.
