Exerting a discipline so modest it may seem stupid, Ward produces trim vessels for the concern with origins that the title of this collection portends. Employing a minimal version of anaphora--the practice of starting successive lines with the same word or phrase--Ward, in most of these poems, begins each line in a stanza with the same letter. The device suits exactly his obsession with how language creates reality for humans. The poems and the things and thoughts they discuss seem, because of this practice, to spring directly from the letters; as Ward says in the elegy for three deaths, "October," by "exploiting how our / Alphabet spreads and scatters," he is "Asking it to be the bits / And pieces, the twigs and leaves." This is genesis indeed, and from it arises poem after poem that is sensually, psychologically, and philosophically compelling. Now and then, Ward deviates by writing acrostics, a variation of rhyme royal, and cleverer forms, with equally exciting results. Ray Olson
