This book is not a guide on how to emigrate, but follows a holistic discussion and analysis of the major aspects of South African emigration, particularly in so far as no book on this topic has yet been published. The idea behind the book was to take the concept of migration and the flow of people across borders and continents, which is a fundamental part of human history and society today, and apply it to South Africa. The reasons that people move around the world are universal and can be summarised broadly as the search for better material conditions and the avoidance of physical danger. The thousands of South Africans participating in the current emigration wave are no different, and their motivation for leaving is founded on the desire to escape from violent crime and to ensure that their quality of life and living standards are not affected by rapidly changing socioeconomic and political conditions.

About the Author:
Johann van Rooyen was born South Africa in 1960. After school in Cape Town he studied Law at the University of Stellenbosch, followed by two years in the South African Navy. He resumed his studies in 1984 at the University of Cape Town in the field of political studies and obtained his Doctorate in 1992. He lectured and guest-lectured for a short while at Rhodes University and UCT before relocating to Ontario, Canada in 1992. There he continued with his research and in 1994 he published Hard Right - South Africa's New White Power (IB Tauris Publishers, London) and contributed chapters in Democratic Nation-building (HSRC Publishers, Pretoria) and in Election '94 South Africa (David Phillip Publishers, Cape Town).

Van Rooyen returned to South Africa with his family in 1996 where he entered the business world. He published his latest book, The New Great Trek (Unisa Press, Pretoria) in September 2000, a culmination of four years of part-time research, his observations of the post-apartheid South Africa and his own experiences abroad. He currently lives in Vancouver, Canada, where he owns and operates his own business.

Review:
This is excellent and high-class journalism as much as academic work - good and trenchant and full of interesting references. -- Dr Lester Crook, commissioning editor, IB Tauris Publishers, London, August 1, 2000

Van Rooyen is the best and most complete guide to this sensitive and crucial matter (of South African emigration). -- Bill Johnson, Director of the Helen Suzman Foundation (personal recommendation), July 1, 2000

Van Rooyen's extensive research throws up many fascinating details...(his) "story" is one which confronts us every day. -- Bonny Schoonakker, Sunday Times, March 4, 2001
