Since it’s premiere in 1875, Carmen has been performed more than any other opera. Author Gail Lavielle traces the origins of this unlikely heroine from her inception as a character in a short story by Merimee through Bizet’s opera adaptation to the modern day film. Through historical research and interviews, the influential events that have shaped the Spanish gypsy are revealed, leading to a more informed interpretation.
