From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 1-- A stylish entry in a new series, featuring charming photographs of a young girl, Emma, and her baby brother, Ben, that have been superimposed on painted backgrounds of household scenes. The text is organized in two-page chapters, each describing a scene in the siblings' day, and is easy enough for beginning readers. Emma plays the little mother as she dresses, feeds, bathes, plays with, and puts Ben to bed. The mother is mentioned occasionally; she gives directions off-camera. Emma sometimes encounters rough spots, such as Ben crying or knocking down some blocks, but she always shows good humor and common sense, getting her brother back on the right track in no time. Indeed, only once does Emma show less-than-perfect behavior when she momentarily refuses to share her teddy. These vignettes depicting white, middle-class children do have potential as conversation starters with older siblings in similar situations, but the text isn't realistic or engaging enough to do the handsome format justice. Photo essays for slightly older children that deal more effectively with the same issues include Lasky's A Baby for Max (Scribners, 1984) and Fred Rogers's The New Baby (Putnam, 1985). --Linda Wicher, Highland Park Public Library, IL

From Publishers Weekly:
Photos are creatively superimposed against uncomplicated background art in these inaugural volumes of the Starting Out series. A note to parents on the two title pages explains that the books are designed to help the very young "welcome a new brother or a new sister" and "develop a sense of responsibility toward a new pet." With their concise yet perky texts and consistently clear, endearing photos, both books achieve these goals easily. Each spread introduces a different aspect of helping to care for or play with either a baby or a puppy. In the first title, Emma feeds her younger brother lunch, plays with him outdoors, hosts a tea party with their teddies and oversees bath and bedtime activities. In the second, Jack takes his frisky golden retriever for a walk, then cleans him up and feeds him. Singularly engaging children--and one adorable puppy--make these beautifully produced books especially appealing. Ages 3-6.
