I was born of "plain folks" and returned to those roots to research the Amish by interviewing contemporaries of my grandfather. They remembered his joviality and soon we were working and talking together over dishpans of fruit on their way to the "can cellar" for winter meals.

I keep in touch with the Amish. Among my friends, I treasure those who willingly read my text with an eye to correcting any inaccuracies about their lifestyle.
