For the last twenty-one years, I have done my best to publish good books about Africa, Cuba, Russia, The War on Terror, and the American West. This is the true story of what has happened to me and to some of those books in America. It is also the true story of my experiences with major news media and my observations on how they reported these extremely sensitive subjects to the American public, or, in some cases, how they brushed the stories under a rug. It is also a commentary on these subjects told with the words and deeds of Russian-crime expert Peter Grinenko, former CIA agent Larry Lunt, best-selling author Robin Moore, Maj. General (Ret.) Jeff Lambert, and myself. The book portrays a dark decade in the history of book distribution and news media production in America. In conclusion, positive trends emerge indicating a much better future. Also, described in detail and full-color photos is the censorship of books, authors and citizens in Cuba during the only American book exhibit since Castro took power. Hemingway's house and desk appear in rare photographs. It is a story about the costs for writing the truth. Some of the people in the story have had their lives utterly ruined or have lost their lives for trying to deliver the best information they could. The personal costs to me have been very high as well. Presently, I teach writing and book publishing courses at Central Arizona College where this book will be required reading for two of my courses.
