From Booklist:
The health care, public safety, and climate information on 71 cities that appeared in America's Top Rated Cities [RBB S 1 92] has been expanded here.

The cities are listed alphabetically; each entry contains statistical tables covering such topics as infant mortality, substance abuse programs, municipal budget expenditures for health services, alcohol and vehicle safety laws, and crime statistics. Explanatory comments follow some tables, and sources are cited for each. A useful feature of some tables is the comparison of a city's figures with the U.S. average, enabling the user to see if health-care costs, for example, are higher or lower than the national average.

Statistics are from a variety of sources--government agencies, magazine articles, and professional directories. Most figures are current (1990-94), with only a few from the late eighties. The death and death-rate table uses the 1989 figure of 360 for death by homicide in the District of Columbia from Vital Statistics of the United States, but the figure in the crime and crime-rate table, taken from the 1992 FBI Uniform Crime Report, gives the number of murders as 443.

Other relocation sources cover some of this information but not in as much depth. 100 Best Small Towns in America (Prentice Hall, 1993), 50 Fabulous Places to Raise Your Family (Career Press, 1992), and Places Rated Almanac (Prentice Hall, 1993) all include the number of health-care providers and facilities in the areas they rate, and all include climate information. The strength of this new title lies in the environmental statistics provided. While other sources comment on water and air quality, this one ranks air quality of the 71 cities, provides an environmental-stress index, municipal budget figures for environmental services, the amount of toxic chemical releases, a pollen calendar, and a detailed table of air pollutants that compares monitored levels to the acceptable level.

While it does not cover as many cities as Places Rated Almanac, Health and Environment in America's Top-Rated Cities is a valuable addition to collections having frequent requests for relocation or health information.
