Zohn fled the Ukraine for New York, became involved with the Yiddish Theatre, and later created the theater program at the University of New Mexico, where he provided a high level of theater education for several decades. This memoir does not do justice to such a rich, varied, and significant life. Zohn begins with some charming and ingenuous childhood memories of Europe and New York, but he never internalizes those memories to explore his life and times. Later the memories become more fragmented and less reflective. The work is trivialized by the inclusion of schedules, program copy, and summaries of 80 plays he directed ( Uncle Vanya gets 12 lines of text, including the cast list). Zohn's life and work deserve more than this, and libraries should wait for a better treatment. Not recommended.
