From the Publisher:
Think of Boston and who comes to mind? The British, or maybe the Irish? Well, guess what! You've been missing Boston's French legacy.

Rhea Hollis Atwood, a popular tour guide, offers a feast of French culture, past and present, at a total of seventy-four numbered sites. Introductory text, maps, historical images, and modern photographs provide wayfinding aids for the walker and context for the armchair traveler.

Highlights include:
· Second Empire, Beaux Arts, Classical Revival, and Art Deco architectural styles
· Urban design inspired by the Paris of Napoleon III
· The Bacchante sculpture at the Boston Public Library - offered in 1896 but refused as too risqué, and installed at last in 1995!
· Boston’s first Catholic bishop, Jean Lefebvre de Cheverus
· French heroes of the American Revolution like the French admiral Count d’Estaing and General LaFayette, and Americans of Huguenot descent like Peter Faneuil and Paul Revere!

A sixth chapter, French Icons Outside the Walks, focuses on the French associations and collections at The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Symphony Hall, The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and The Paul Revere House. This book will change the way you think about Boston!
