'The time was 1946, and the world had been ravaged by war. There was no civilian transport between England and the Far East; even letters were unreliable and through Army Field Post Offices. The very idea of a young girl setting out on her own was unthinkable, but I had already begun my journey four years earlier when I had met Roswell Bradley, and there could be no turning back.' So the narrator begins a hazardous journey across the world to rejoin the love of her life, Roswell, who had been made responsible for disposing of military surplus throughout the Far East. Wings Over Leyte captures a brief moment of transition from the magic of the old world to that one that we know today - a time now lost forever. It records their survival through acts of God as well as acts of men in an exotic environment told eloquently with a light humour an obvious compassion. The near constant dangers and their indomitable spirit make an uplifting tale of adventure. Beautifully written it captures a time and a place perfectly. The descriptive passages are often moving and the love between the narrator and the protagonist is inspiring as is their approach to life: A wonderful piece of writing and an important social document.

About the Author:
Lavinia Bradley gave up a hard-earned place at Somerville College, Oxford, reading English Literature, to throw herself into the war effort, but two months before her call up that she met Roswell at an English Speaking Union party for newly-arrived US officers. From that moment, her life set off in its true direction. Within weeks she was working for the US Army G-2 Hqs in London at top-secret level and spent an exciting but demanding war seeing as much of Roswell as possible. With peace, the US Foreign Liquidation Commission appointed Boswell Chief of Aircraft for the Far East and China, and they began a new adventure in Manila. After 49 years of shared adventures, Roswell died in 1991. She officially documented his life in SPECIAL MISSIONS for the US Mil. Hist Inst. She also wrote Inkle Weaving, and now lives in Sussex.
