One thing that struck me as I photographed the New York City Disco and nightlife scene in the late 1970's was the inclusiveness and overall diversity and cultural mix these clubs. I had never experienced a place where gays, lesbians, transgender people, black, white and straight people all mixed so freely and without judgement. It seemed to be a harmonious mix of cultures unseen by the world until this moment.
"Be whoever you want to be". That seemed to be the mantra. Disco seemed so much more to me than the music, or the dance or the celebrities or the drugs. It was a safe haven for anyone and everyone for freedom of self expression. This is what I was drawn to as a photographer. I didn't know it then, but now I see that this was a short lived, "sneek peak" at a world of acceptance that we now, in 2015, are just beginning to see happen in "the real world."

About the Author:

Photographer Bill Bernstein has been documenting popular culture since the 1970's when he started as a photographer for The Village Voice in New York City. It was there that he began covering the Nightlife Scene in New York City with his camera in the late '70s.In 1978-'80 Bernstein spent his nights photographing at many of the most popular night spots of the time. The resulting body of work is published in "Disco: The Bill Bernstein Photographs"by Reel Art Press. Later on, Bernstein was the official tour photographer for Sir Paul McCartney and documented his world tours from 1989-2005. This body of work was published by Chronicle Books in 2004 and entitled "Each One Believing: Paul McCartney On Stage, Off Stage and Backstage" by Paul McCartney and Bill Bernstein.Bill Bernstein is now shooting stills and video. He lives in New York City with his wife and son.
