This is the first complete French translation of the famous Mathnawi. The Mathnawi is one of the best known and most influential works of Sufi mysticism. Begun in 1258 AD at the suggestion of a disciple, it was completed in 1273. The six books of the poem in 3 volumes amount to more than 25,000 verses. Loosely structured and colloquial in style, the work pursues its way through hundreds of stories drawn from many literary and other sources and used to illustrate the main theme, the human being's predicament in his search for God.

About the Author:
The translator, Christer Gabriel Oxenstierna was born in Stockholm, Sweden on October 27, 1925. He has penned over 25 books and some 950 poems, over half of which in Spanish and other European languages. His literary output ranges from adventure stories to introspective works of great psychological and mystical complexity, as well as writings on controversial issues in ancient history and archeology. In the early 70s he took the first steps towards Rumi and the Mathnawi, by founding and leading a study circle in philosophy. Inevitably he came across the Mathnawi in Nicholson's English translation. Over the next twenty five years he felt guided as if somehow this was the mission he was destined to carry out. With a thorough knowledge of European languages and linguistics, he felt he had the knowledge, the time, and the motivation to complete the momentous undertaking. Initially he only intended to translate the Mathnawi into Swedish. But he continued with the German, Spanish, French and Italian translations. The work took 25 years. Two weeks after the completion of the final Italian verse, a slowly developing eye disease took a sudden turn for the worse, making serious translation work impossible. He lives with his wife Elsa on the east coast of the island of Gotland.
