History is written by historians, but without access to archives, without the existence of archives, there would be no history. Jimerson, a professional archivist and past president of the Society of American Archivists, explains what archives are and why it is essential that they be maintained. He works primarily with American records but his observations are universally applicable. In his preface, Jimerson states his belief in social responsibility and justice. The preservation of primary documents is part of the process of discovering the truth. When information is destroyed, so is accurate history. What people and governments choose to save says much about them. He demonstrates this with the South African records made during Apartheid, and how they are now being used to redress injustices. Jimerson also discusses the role of the archivist in organizing and interpreting data. His obvious passion for his profession and its importance is conveyed on every page. Archives do have power, from recording major events to proving where and when one was born. This book is a reminder of how essential they are to a free society.
